Babu Sassi, a fearless young man from southern India is the cult hero of Dubai 's army of construction workers.

Known as the "Indian on the top of the world", Babi is the crane operator at the world's tallest building , the 819-meter Burj Dubai. His office, the cramped crane cab perched on top of the Burj, is also his home. Apparently it takes too long to come down to the ground each day to make it worthwhile. When the building is completed, its elevators will be the world's fastest.

Stories about his daily dalliance with death are discussed in revered terms by Dubai 's workers. Some say he has been up there for more than a year, others whisper that he's paid 30,000 dirhams ($8,168) a month compared with the average wage of 800 dirhams a month. All agree he's worth it.

It is a great inspiring story !

His story is an inspiration for millions. A self-made entrepreneur, his mission is to help the poor through job creation. E Sarathbabu hit the headlines after he rejected several high profile job offers from various MNCs after he passed out of IIM, Ahmedabad two years ago.

He instead started a catering business of his own, inspired by his mother who once sold idlis on the pavements of Chennai, worked as an ayah in an Anganvadi to educate him and his siblings. As a child, he also sold idlis in the slum where he lived. "We talk about India shining and India growing, but we should ensure that people do not die of hunger. We can be a developed country but we should not leave the poor people behind. I am worried for them because I know what hunger is and I still remember the days I was hungry," says Sarathbabu.

In August 2006, Sarathbabu's entrepreneurial dream came true with Foodking. He had no personal ambition but wanted to buy a house and a car for his mother. He has bought a car but is yet to buy a house for his mother. The "foodking" still lives in the same hut in Madipakkam in Chennai. Today, Foodking has six units and 200 employees, and the turnover of the company is Rs.32 lakh a month. But it has not been a bed of roses for Sarathbabu. After struggling and making losses in the first year, he managed a turnaround in 2007.

How has his experience as a 'Foodking' been in the last two years? Sarathbabu shares the trial and tribulations of an exciting and challenging job in an interview with Shobha Warrier.

A tough beginning
As I am a first generation entrepreneur, the first year was very challenging. I had a loan of Rs 20 lakh by the end of first year. I had no experience in handling people in business, and it was difficult to identify the right people. Though I made losses in the first year, not even once did I regret my decision of not accepting the offers from MNCs and starting an enterprise of my own. I looked at my losses as a learning experience. I was confident that I would be successful one day.

My first unit was at IIM, Ahmedabad. When we started our second unit in October 2006, I thought now I would start making money. But I made losses of around Rs 2000 a day. A first generation entrepreneur cannot afford such a loss. But I worked really hard, working till 3 a.m. in the morning. What reduced my losses were the birthday party offers.

I started the third unit again in Ahmedabad but it also made losses. All my units were cafeteria and I understood then that the small cafeterias do not work; I needed huge volumes to work. My friends who were extremely supportive in the first year when things were difficult for me. I had taken loans from my IIM-A friends. They were earning very well.

In December 2006, an IIM Ahmedabad alumni event took place in Mumbai and I decided to go there mainly to get a contract. I was hopeful of getting it. I also knew that if I got the huge contract, I would come out of all the losses I had been incurring.

I booked my train ticket from Ahmedabad to Mumbai for Rs 300 and I had Rs 200 in my hand. As the meet went on till late at night, I could reach the station only at midnight. I missed the train. I decided to sit on the platform till the morning and travel by the next train in the morning. I didn't have the money to check into a hotel. I didn't want to disturb any of my friends so late at night.

It was an unforgettable night as I was even shoved off by policemen from the platform. It was quite insulting and embarrassing. After two hours, people started moving in, I also went in.

A man who sat next to me on the platform gave me a newspaper so that I could sleep. I spread the newspaper and slept on the platform! I sleep well. I got my ticket refund in the morning and went back to Ahmedabad. And, luck did not favour me, I didn't get the contract.

In March 2007, I got an offer to start a unit at BITS, Pilani (Sarathbabu was an alumnus of BITS, Pilani). That was the first medium break for me. For the first time, I started making profits there though the other units continued to make losses. The reason for our success at BITS, Pilani was the volume; there were more students and there was a need for a unit like ours while in Ahmedabad, they have at least a hundred options.

If I made Rs 5000 a day at Ahmedabad in two shifts, here I made Rs 15,000 a day. BITS, Pilani unit gave me the confidence to move on. Unless you make money, you can't be confident in business.

What changed my fortune
When all my friends who worked for various MNCs made good money every month and I made losses with my venture. But I kept telling myself, I am moving in the right direction to reach my ambition and vision. My dream was to provide employment and I was doing just that. I continued to work till 3 a.m. but I never felt tired.

Through BITS, Pilani, I got the BITS, Goa contract and that was the biggest break for me. It was not a cafeteria like the earlier ones but the dining hall that we got. We had to feed 1300 students. We started our operations in July 2007. At Rs 50, for 1300 students, our sales was Rs 65,000 per day. We soon started making a profit of Rs 10 to 15,000 a day. Around 60 to 70 people work there. I gave the charge of the Ahmedabad operations to one of my managers and moved to Goa.

I was still in debt by Rs 15-20 lakhs but I knew BITS, Goa would keep my dream alive. Within six months of starting our operations in Goa, I repaid all my debt.

I was called to give a speech at the SRM Deemed University. After the speech, I asked the Chancellor, can you give me an opportunity to serve in your campus? He said, "If not you, to whom will I give such an opportunity?" It's a food court but a big one, similar to the one at BITS, Pilani. There are around 17,000 students there.

Now, I have the BITS, Hyderabad contract, ready to start in July 2008. Other than the six units, I have approached a few more universities and corporate houses too. In the first year, I had made a loss of Rs 25 lakh. Right now, we have a turnover of Rs 32 lakh every month, which works out to 3.5 crore (Rs 35 million) a year.

I have hired about 200 people. Indirectly, we touch the lives of around 1000 people. By this year end, we will have 500 people working for us. Only 10% of my workers are educated, the rest are uneducated. I want to make a change in their lives. If they have any problem, I will take care of it. We support the marriages and education of poor families. We are paying more to the employees as the company is doing well. Now that the foundation is strong, I plan to have ten units and a turnover of Rs 20 crore (Rs 200 million) turnover by next year.

His advice: Never give up!
In the last two years, I have given more than 120 lectures in various institutions in India. When I got the first opportunity to speak, I thought God had given me an opportunity to encourage or inspire entrepreneurs. When youngsters tell me they are inspired, I feel good.

When you just dish out the theory, nobody believes you. But when you do it, they believe you. What I tell them is based on my own experiences.

When I thought of starting a company, I felt India needed 100 people like Narayana Murthy and Ambani. If 100 such people support 2 lakh people each, imagine how many Indians get supported.

Entrepreneurship is needed to uplift the poor. It is not easy to be an entrepreneur, especially a first generation entrepreneur.

There will be lots of challenges in the beginning but you should learn to look for the light at the end of the tunnel.
Never give up even if there are hurdles. There are many who give up within a week.
You need determination and a tough mind to cross the initial hurdles.
If you are starting without much money, you should not have any overhead expenses.
He still lives in the same hut
As I am in the food business, I know how much the price of every food item has gone up. Many people will languish in poverty because of inflation. Had my mother been working as an Anganvadi ayah today and earning Rs 1500, she would not have been able to feed us and educate us.

On the one side, we talk about India shining and India growing, but we should ensure that people do not die of hunger. We can be a developed country but we should not leave the poor people behind. I am worried for them because I know what hunger is and I still remember the days I was hungry. That is why I feel it is our responsibility to take care of them.

I wanted to buy a car and a house for my mother. I bought a car first, not a house. I still live in the same house, the same hut. I can build a house right now but I want my business to grow a little more. I feel good in the hut; that’s where I get my energy, that's where I lived 25 years of my life. I want to remind myself that the money and fame should not take me away from what I want to achieve.

But within six months, I will build a good house for my mother. Her only advice to me is, don't waste money.
Till I was in the 10th, there was no electricity in my house. I had to sit near the kerosene lamp and concentrate hard. That's how I learnt to concentrate.

The two year journey has been very enriching. It seems like a 20-year journey for me. I was living every moment of the two years, from sleeping on the Mumbai railway station platform to this level.

We planned a trip to Mysore in the 06 year end. Its not to mark the new year, but a get-together before Prem and Mohana goes to US for Honey Moon Phase-II in the name of serving clients on-site. In whole of the trip, Somnathapuram was amazing by its carved sculputures. Its a ever remerberable trip.

For Investment, Coimbatore is the best place in the country. Also, Coimbatore has been rated decent in the earning and living. Being a coimbatoran, Now I have enough reasons to be proud :)

Satellite township for Chennai Near Vandalur

There are lot of news about Satellite township near Vandalur in the Tamil media. It is a good plan, government could have done that earlier itself. There are lot to talk about that township. In today's Chennai Anna Nagar is a very important place. It has been constructed from so thought called deserted place. If government can plan and implement many such townships, It is very good for the city. and It can retain the fame, it has.

From the media and assembly news, I understand the township will be located between Vandalur and Kelambakkam road, near vandalur itself. I am very much familiar with that area. I was travelling in that road atleast for six months.

The area is ideal location for the township. It is between GST road and Old Mahabalipuram road. Old Mahabalipuram road is the HOT place for software companies. We can expect even more companies to that road. The GST road is also very important connecting road. There are lot of important places in that road like Airport, Tambaram, Chrompet and Pallavaram.

During the township establishment, They need to widen the existing Vandalur to Kelambakkam road to six way or more. Also, they need to lay two new wider roads connecting the township to Thoraipakkam and pallavarm separately. This can ease the traffice burden in the GST road and the old Mahabalipuram road.

Important of all, the existing localities should be given benefitable options. I know, the most part of that area is under developed. They should be compensated with what they deserve for losing their land. The issue has been already taken for the political gain. Government need to tackle it in the right way.

What it means to anyone reading this blog????? Buy a land near Kelambakkam on the road to the township. You have great gain in the future !!!

Vetaiyadu Vilaiyadu

Last week-end, I was on trip to Viruthu Nagar for close friend's sister marriage. That was our friend's get-together after longtime. We got freetime on saturday night to go for a movie. We have chosen to go to Vetaiyadu Vilaiyadu. The movie was released only on the previous day. There was a decent crowd for the movie.

Before seeing the movie, We all have listened to the songs. I was already impressed with the song "Paartha naal muthalae", When I listened for the first time itself. Let me tell you, what we have found in the screen.

The movie starts with Kamala Hasan's fight with mobsters. It was pretty impressive intro to the hero. Kamala Hasan has not taken this stylish intro before, to my knowledge. A college girl is kidnapped and missing. She is nobody but Prakash Raj's daughter. Prakash Raj calls KamalaHasan for Investigation. Our hero gets into the investigation and finds out the girl[?]. Oops.... The movie doesn't look to be for all. They just remind, that it is A certified movie for violence.

Later, PrakashRaj and his wife moves to NewYork. They found to be missing from there. NY police contacts TN police for investigation. It needs to be investigated and our hero has been asked to do that. He embarks in NY with his flashback. There comes the Kamalini Mukherjee and the "paartha naal muthalae" song. She looks pretty good... She deserves the hype that Jothika got in valli. She doesn't come long in the story. Its only a short flashback. Except that song, that flashback didn't make any touch.

During the investigation, separate track with Jothika goes there. It goes on like a friendly neighbor. Somehow Kamal expresses his interest to Jothika. She didnt accept it.

Is Kamal able to findout the culprits? Does Jothika survives or dies like "Kakka kakka"? What about Kamal's affection? All, I can say here is the questions are answered.

Dakshin chitra

During this week-end Chennai visit, We friends went to Dakshin Chitra. It is a place in ECR, next to MGM. Here, they have exhibited house varities of south India.

Before entering to the houses, they have orientation video on this houses. We felt it as boring and walked out to see the houses.

Its all real houses of various varities. Most of house models are for TN and Kerala. I guess, they are expanding for AP and Karnataka. For TN, They have models of Chetti nadu house/Thanjur house/ Ayyar house.. etc. They also have street of Tamil Nadu houses. To make it a real, they have included palm readers, bioscope showers and Mehanthi drawers.

It is glad to know that the glass blowers were there in the ancient times too. One glass blower has prepared a glass art infront of all of us. It was interesting. They have kept a board on Earlier Tamil scripts. The script has been changed a lot for centuries to bring to the present one.

They provide Lunch. We didnt find it worth for the money payed for that. They can better it further...

Its worth of visiting once.

March of penguins !!!

Thats a NGC's feature film by warner brothers.

Who is the Hero and herione? Its all penguins.
Whats the story? Typical life of penguins.

The films starts with the story of penguins marching towards deep inland for mating. All the eligible ones gather and try to find a mate for them. Interestingly, the competition is between females to get a male one. Males doesn't mind to wait and watch females fighting for them. The successful females gets partners. Females change their partners every season.

After all their romance, females are filled with and they lay an egg. Interestingly, then comes the part of Males for caring. Among male creatures, Male-penguins are the most contributing ones for the offsprings. After the egg has been laid, the females ones walk towards sea for food. They walk as much as 110 kms to reach the sea. Meanwhile, the males hatch the egg and save from severe cold. The temperature drops to as low as -50 c. They dont have food to eat for three months. Their food is in the sea, which is very far. Hence, they spend all their energy and starve. The males join and stay together as gang to survive from severe storms. Finally, chicks come out from eggs. The males give the same care even after the hatch.

Finally, the female counter-parts come back with filled stomach from sea. Penguins too have predators. All the penguins marching towards sea doesn't come back. Sometimes, sea-lions will eat away some penguins. What happens to their mate? They wait for long and give away the eggs/chicks. On their return, females identity their mates by their screech. Now males go for filling their stomach. This is repeated by males and females till their chicks grow to survive on its own.

Someday, the grown chicks march towards the inland...

Thats the story. Good movie for me in the recent times...

I am very much thankful to same CP and Thenu for giving the movie March of penguins to watch. I felt thats the only fruitful thing, I have done last week-end.

I said I will get a good project for my sister for her academic. I am still looking to find the one. I hope, I will make it.

I want to come to office on-time daily. I am not doing it for the past two years. Once-in-a-while, for meeting I rush to come early.

I wish to conquer the world officially and give it back to people in the Buffet/Gates way.

I miss... so much.... But, I am used to it. When I joined college, I missed what enjoyed in school. When I finished UG, I missed those Kongu days. When I have finished PG, I missed my college-gang. When I left my first job, I missed people who has given the great things to my life !!! lot more.....

Last Sunday night, I was watching CNN-IBN. There was a CNN-IBN Investigation program about LTTE.

Their investigation gives many shocking facts. I never thought LTTE could have been trained by Indian establishments.

LTTE was intially trained by Indian Army and RAW. This includes people like Prabhakaran and Anton Balasingam. They have shown the interview of Police chief of LTTE. He said, he was trained in Chennai. Further on this, they have shown photos of meeting of Rajiv Gandhi with Prabhakaran, Anton Bala singam and MGR's representative.

From Investigation, they claim Prabhakaran was betrayed by Rajiv Gandhi and he payed off himself later. There are further interesting stories in the ibnlive web. Visit the following links:

10-lane highway in Bangalore

Great news of last week was 10-lane highway in the Hosur Road.

How they are going to make it? There is going to be a Four-lane elevated highway. The existing four lane will be widened to six way with service-lane on both sides. So, all together, it will be 6+4=10 lane highway.

The elevated highway will be constructed on BOT basis. Neither Central nor state government will be investing in that. The commuters need to pay toll to use the highway. The toll amount may be bit high, because of the expenditure involved in the project.

They claim to finish the elevated part by 2008. It doesn't seem to be pragmatic !!! I predict, it cannot be operational before 2010 from the past experience in bangalore.

Existing pattern of approach to the infrastructure development should be changed to a new and an intelligent way to cater the need.

ME classmates get-together....

Days are going very fast..... We have completed four years after our ME. Some day, when I was speaking with Ajay/Revathi and Venkat, then came the idea of get-together.

We planned to gather in a Hotel in Koramangala. The attendance was really good. Bharathi brought her daughter Yazhilini and her niece Shalini.

There were some special announcement from people.

Altogether, it was a great enjoyment. We are planning for more of such meet in the future.

Thirupathi visit and useful tips....

My Manager had a venduthal to goto Tirupathi. So, He planned to travel to Tirupathi in his City. I just tagged on with him. We started on Friday evening from here and reached Tirupathi. We stayed in Hotel Mayura there. Though it was little expensive, But it was good. As soon as we checked in, we went to Devasthanam office to get the special darshan ticket 50 bugs. I got some additional tickets to get additional ladus. The time of visit was 8am next day morning.

We woke up early in the morning to get ready. We started out from the hotel by 6am. We reached the bottom of hill. There was a security check-in before taking path to upper Tirupathi. The road to upper thirupathi was good and it is one way. The travel was short and nice. Inside the temple, We stood in the queue for half an hour. When we reached the queue-end, we have found that the cell phones are not allowd inside the temple. So went back to cloak room, handed over our cell phones and they allowed us inside.

Surprisingly, we had good darshan for 20 seconds including some queue time in the inner temple. The devasthanam people try their best for arrangements. All together from the queue, it was only an hour from 8am to 9am. hats off to them!!! After upper Tiupati, we went to Alarmelmangauram temple also.

My tips for Tirupati visit are:

1. Be there the day before you want the visit. Collect your tokens from bottom Tirupati Devasthanam office on the previous day.

2. If you want more laddus, you can get more darshan tokens. It is legal.

3. Keep to your right in the queue when you approach the inner temple. You can have good darshnam in the queue, when you stand opposite to the statue.

4. The Chittor ring road is in a bad condition. I dont know what to say when asked Rs15 toll for that. Drive carefully there.

5. Bangalore to Tirupati road has sudden speed breaks in the road.

6. My friend has told there is alternate from oskot to bangalore. Not sure of it. Please enquire about it.

7. Chittor to Tirupati road was really good. But it is too much that they mentioned speed limit as 100 km/hr with out center-median. Beware there is a speed-break somewhere on the way.

8. If are travelling in car to upper tirupati, Dont forget to take security check-in before entering hill-road. Also, it takes sometime to clear the security check. So plan for that.

Golden Gate SanFrancisco

I am happy to be at Golden Gate bridge, San Francisco. It is one of the biggest hanging bridge in the world.

It has been constructed in 1937. I am wondering about the developments 70 years back.

I have taken boat ride in the sea. They have taken us under the bridge and around Alcatraz island. It is worth of taking the ride though it costs 21 bugs.

Official Visit to Oracle HQ,SanFrancisco

It is a long planned trip to the head quaters of Oracle,SFO. The Official visit has been planned for six weeks.

This is the first time ever I am going out of India. The Sillicon Valley is the heavy money flowing area of the world. The Infrastructure is amazing here. Anyone who see the so called free-way first-time will be impressed. thats for sure. I have never been in the road in 150km/hour before coming here. 5+5 lanes are common here. I just dont compare this place with any where in the world. Simillar infrastructure may be there in the world, But I am very impressed here.

People here are supposed to be friendly. That is how they are brought up. On Morning walk, We can see people smiling at others, saying Hi and even Good Morning, How are you guys? The people are forced to respect the pedestrians and cyclists on the road. Anyone driving in the road definetly respect STOP sign. Onseeing this sign, Most of the car riders bring the car speed to zero and move. The on-demand pedestrian crossing is a good idea for the locations, where we have less people on the road. The good infrastructure made the city to expand spaciously. This leads to car-ride for everything. So, everybody has car. This in-turn leads to Poor public Transport.

The important thing to mention is food. I could have been impressed by infrastructure, But not by food. The so called Indian restaurants doesn't serve the Indian food. The customized version of the Indian food is not good here. I have been forced to cook most of the item, because of the poor food. Most Indian Non-vegetarians take Chicken, Mutton, Fish and prawns. But here, beef and pork are the most common food. Dont get surprised, If people doesn't know the meaning of Vegetarian.

"Most places in India don't receive this kind of rainfall in a year. This is the highest-ever recorded in India's history. We have to compare it with world records to find out if this was the highest in the world," RV Sharma, director of the meteorological department, told The Associated Press.

The All India Radio reported about 150,000 people were stranded in railway stations across Mumbai, India's main financial center.

Early Wednesday, Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, the state's top elected official, called the army, navy and home guards to help with the relief effort.

"Inflatable rafts will be used to reach stranded people. Please try to stay where you are and don't leave your homes," he said.

Tens of thousands of people were stranded for hours on roads in Bombay, and its airport -- one of the busiest in the country -- was shut Tuesday evening. All incoming flights were diverted to New Delhi and other airports.

PSGTech/CIT/PSGCAS ?

My Sister's talent is not recognised in our house till a day when she said she is the class topper in the semester results. We didn't expected her to study, atleast I. She has taken science stream.[In fact it is me, forced her to take this]. At the end of the course, She has come up with whopping 86% in her academic.

Atleast now, we wish her to come to the engineering stream. She got through PSG CAS. She has interview in CIT on coming saturday. Through a close friend of mine, I heared that she will get thro PSG Tech also. Anyhow, she will join PSGCAS initially. If she gets through PSG Tech/CIT, She will quit CAS and join Tech. I should thank to close friend of mine in PSG Tech for helping my Sister.

The obvious other question is why not MCA? My Sister doesnt like it, despite I insist that.

Let us see what happens...

Anniyan - My review

I went to Anniyan, last sunday. I went to the movie with lot of expectations. It was met to large extent.

The film doen't go with story. But, screen play is good. The other positive of the film includes Vikram, direction, Music and Fights. Vikram is a real Hero. Three of his rolls are really very good. Remo reminds an Italian model. Even though the Fights reminds Matrix, But still it is good to see in a tamil movie. The song backgrounds are really very rich. Money spent on that really distinguishes it. Despite Sadha's minor roll, she has done her best or Shankar made it. She need to check her weight. She is very lean.

The negatives are Known story/well known Multipersonality disorder/Logical questions wont get answered properly.

Moral of the story :-) is Be a responsible citizen before making anyone else as scapegoat.

I always prefix the word "hell", When I use the word horoscope. I really hate it like anything. This concept may be true, I am not denying it. I feel like it is kind of untouchability. Even though the "hell" horoscope has not played any bad on my life, I hate it. I am seeing lot of girls not getting married, thanks to the new untouchability.

Everyone is a human being. Everyone has feeling. In Indian system of marriage, the girls are given less chance for options. I do know stopped marriages, when bride woke up in the last minute. Those stopped marraiges are just stopped for ever for the bride. No one wants to take risk...

I got the passport and applied for Visa on the same day. I managed to find a slot only after five months. so many people on the queue...

Government employees are faineant

I am a lazy fellow. I have applied for passport only recently. I was just keep on seeing my passport status in the web. Finaly one day, I have seen my passport has been despatched in their web. But, it has not reached me thanks to irresponsible post man. I was waiting in the home daily and went to office only in the afternoon. No use..... No postman approached me. I enquired in the local post office, after 10 days. He noted my address details. I am not sure, he may be the culprit. I also enquired in the Koramangala post office. Even there, I didn't find anything useful.

I went to passport office yesterday. I ride very occassionally in the city... I dunno route. Enquired through out the way and finally managed to get there. Managed to park my bike, and joined the queue for enquiry. The queue was moving very fastly. I was very happy about fast moving queue. Later, when I reached the counter, I have found why the queue is moving fast. Lady in the counter is more hurry to serve the next in the queue than answering me. She told to give letter to resend the passport again. I walked a long distance to find a post-office to get reg-post cover. I have submitted the documents and returned to office only in the afternoon.

Let me see what happens next......
